What a fun visit to @appassionataestate on this gorgeous fall day. They offer 2 different and unique flights and experiences for guests - taste the Appassionata wines or the J Christopher Wines. We tasted the Appassionata, which included some beautiful and special older vintages of Pinot Noir that they hang onto until ready to release. We also really enjoyed their Riesling, which ferments for 2 years in a giant foudre and then is cellared in bottle for 3 years before release. Why is it so hard to open those older bottles, always feeling like we need a special occasion? Tonight, we opened a 2013 Redman and paired it with the coho salmon we caught on Whidbey Island. A perfectly good reason to open an older bottle. And it did not disappoint. So elegant and so layered with earth and spice as it opened up. Did you know that New Mexico is the oldest wine producing region in the United States? Winemaking dates back more than 400 years, the earliest wines being used for religious sacrament. The first vines were planted near Los Alamos in the 1600s. Today, we tasted wines along the magnificent Camino Rio Grande, our favorites - a luscious and mouth-watering red blend at Embudo Valley Vineyards with winemaker Josh Johnson and a dreamy Cabernet Franc by Vivác Winery.

In New Mexico for a little fun and adventure. Found some beautiful vintage Zuni and Navajo jewelry in Santa Fe, eating the best green chili imaginable at Tia Sophia's Restaurant and drinking a selection of bubbles (and oddly, Pinot Noir from the Dundee hills) at Gruet Winery Tasting Room.
